The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking an Executive Director, ASHRM & SHSMD for our Chicago office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary = $180,000 - $225,000 (commensurate with related experience).

The Executive Director, ASHRM and SHSMD serves as chief staff officer of ASHRM and SHSMD and the primary liaison to each Society's Advisory Board. Directs the Society's strategic planning processes, with input from the Advisory Board and staff, and in alignment with the AHA strategic plan. Leads the development of SHSMD and ASHRM goals, objectives, and tactics, allocating appropriate resources for their implementation. Tracks progress to each strategic plan and communicates status on goals and objectives. Responsible for all aspects of governance management including preparing meeting agendas in consultation with leadership and attending and facilitating Advisory Board meetings. Directs and manages committee activities and, in consultation with the Advisory Board leadership and staff, designs and recommends programmatic content and services as appropriate to meet each Society's strategic objectives. Seeks guidance from the Vice President, PMGs, as needed on best practices in Advisory Board governance.

  • Financial Planning and Performance:

Using the ASHRM and SHSMD strategic plans and stated priorities, develops an annual budget for each Society for AHA approval. Tracks and manages financial resources accordingly, engages staff in conversations regarding performance, prepares regular forecasts and develops corrective plans for deviations to budget. Keeps AHA management advised. Guides the execution of each Society's programs, products and services according to the strategic plan and allocated resources.

Monitors, evaluates, and negotiates contracts with business partners, suppliers or service-providers, vendors, speakers' agents, etc. in accordance with AHA procurement policy; engages legal counsel in reviewing business terms.

  • Operational Performance:

Plans and directs the implementation of each Society's programs, products and services which are timely and relevant to members and the profession as a whole. These may include but are not limited to:

    • SHSMD annual conference and exhibition
    • ASHRM annual conference and exhibition
    • Educational programs (live education, webcasts, online education)
    • Publications (newsletters, journals, books)
    • Website and online resources (career center, online tools)
    • Professional recognition and continuing education
    • Member recruitment, retention, and chapter relations programs
    • Advocacy efforts (legislative and regulatory)
    • Certification and designation programs
  1. Selects, manages, and engages employees; conducts performance reviews and takes appropriate action to achieve operational results in accordance with AHA procedures; develops talent and future leaders within and across each Society to cultivate an environment that supports professional development and encourages diversity in team
  2. Represents the AHA and ASHRM and SHSMD in public communications and with existing and potential members, business partners, committees, and stakeholders. Ensures marketing and communication strategies are consistent with vision, mission, and values and enhance the reputation of each Society; interacts with others within the Association; develops and fosters collaborative relationships with external organizations to advance the mission and vision of each Society and for the successful implementation of ASHRM and SHSMD programs and services.
  3. Participates as an active team member in the division of professional membership groups, taking a vested interest in the success of the division as whole. Collaborates with other society directors to determine type and quality of support services needed from division. Willing to take a lead role on collaboration within PMG groups and other AHA units. Provides leadership and coordinates collaborative relationships between ASHRM and SHSMD and other professional groups and AHA business units.

The Executive Director, ASHRM and SHSMD serves as chief staff officer of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) and the Society for Health Care Strategy & Market Development (SHSMD), which are both Professional Membership Groups (PMG) of the American Hospital Association (AHA). This position is responsible for overseeing the operations of two membership Societies, managing the Advisory Board of each Society; developing and implementing each Society's strategic plan and budget; organizing, directing, and evaluating staff, programs and activities of the Society in accordance with the Society's guidelines and the AHA's policies. The Executive Director also will be responsible for supporting and advancing each Society's mission, vision and goals on behalf of the membership and profession in collaboration with the Advisory Boards and the Association; operating the Societies in a manner demonstrating integrity, collaboration, and innovation.

Qualifications

Education
Bachelors of BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION & MANAGEMENT (required)

Experience
10 years: Minimum 10 years of experience (and professional certification) within either: association management (CAE) or business management (MBA). Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience managing others is required. (required)
