About Us

Coborn's, Inc. is a thriving employee-owned company featuring 120+ retail locations, including 48 grocery stores throughout the Midwest. We employ 7,400+ fantastic employees, representing five generations of Coborn family leadership. With Chris Coborn as president and CEO, last year's revenue was $1.2 billion. We're expanding throughout the Midwest and are continually improving our operations so we can continue to be a company our employees are proud to own.

Our mission and vision are simple: Be the Best Place to Work and Be the Best Place to Shop. We do this by providing superior value to our customers and working ethically to do what is right.

The different grocery store formats we offer include: Coborn's, Cash Wise, and Save-A-Lot. Besides our brick and mortar grocery stores, we also have a unique service called CobornsDelivers and Cash Wise Delivers, an online grocery ordering and home delivery service. We also own and operate 35 liquor stores, under the brands of Coborn's Liquor, Cash Wise Liquor, Payless Liquor, and Captain Jack's. Plus, our fuel and convenience division, pharmacy division, in-house grocery warehouse and distribution center, in-house Central Bakery, and Tops Cleaners are significant assets to our operations. We also have a handful of entities in the markets where the fit is right: Ace Hardware, Caribou Coffee, Dunn Bros Coffee, and Subway.

As an ESOP company, we take pride in ownership and we accomplish our goals through competitive prices, friendly services, product quality, cleanliness, and safety. Our company Golden Rule is: treat all with dignity and respect and we live it every day.

We believe in giving back to the communities that support our businesses. As philanthropists, we give to health initiatives, youth, nonprofits and the fight to end hunger. In 2012, we gave away $2.4 million to support the communities we serve and we donated more than 1.4 million fresh and nutritious meals to those who need it most in our local communities, through our partnership with Second Harvest Heartland. Our “Bag Hunger” program also invites customers to get involved by purchasing prepackaged grocery bags for food shelves.

Because the well-being of our communities is important to us, we continue to invest in health education; we encourage health and wellness through nutritious food choices and being active. Some of our recent investments include the implementation of the NuVal food nutrition scoring program in our Coborn's stores and the hiring of our own staff dietitian to help educate food buyers, customers, and the community at large.

We're always seeking ways to improve our company and expanding our horizons.

Coborn's Inc. Donation/Sponsorship Criteria

Coborn's Inc. has a long and strong tradition of community caring, service and support, dating back to our first store in Sauk Rapids, MN, which opened in 1921. We emphasize the importance of tailoring our services and support to meet "the specific needs and desires of the communities we serve," and our business practices follow Coborn's Golden Rule: "Treat all with dignity and respect."

Coborn's Inc. is an integral part of the communities we serve. Each year, we donate more than $2.3 million and thousands of volunteer hours to our local communities. As grocers, we are dedicated to fighting hunger and supporting healthy living. Our company donates tons of food to local food shelves, and provides major funding for the Coborn Cancer Center, Central Minnesota's premiere center for cancer treatment and research. Coborn's Inc. is also a leader in giving to United Way in the communities we serve.

We have established the following criteria to guide us in distributing donations in the communities we serve. These criteria are not intended to discourage organizations from requesting donations, but rather to maintain a direction and focus as we respond to the ever-growing number of requests for support.
  • The organization must be a non-profit organization, and be part of one of the communities we serve. If the request is for a specific event, the event must be within one of the communities we serve.
  • Coborn's Inc. gives top priority to requests from organizations and activities serving children and families in need.
  • Coborn's Inc. does not make contributions to or support fundraising for individuals (unless they are immediate family members of company employees experiencing a crisis) because of the large number of these requests we receive.
  • Requests must be formally submitted, preferably using our Donation Request Form which is available at all Coborn's locations, or online. We will also accept formal requests on the requesting organization's official letterhead.
  • Coborn's Inc. Donations Committee meets regularly to review requests. Requests are submitted at least three weeks in advance to ensure proper consideration.
  • Coborn's Inc. reserves the right to determine which organizations or activities it chooses to fund.
